Last Sunday, when the USA fell just short (30 seconds of reasonable defense short) of defeating Portugal, people took to social media like Suarez to a tasty Italian. There were 10 million people with 20 million interactions via Facebook and 8 million via Twitter talking about the USA vs. Portugal match. With those numbers in mind, it seems a no-brainer for sports organizations to create cross-promotional content based around the USMNT and World Cup fervor. So, have they? Has it succeeded? Here are four sports organizations doing a great job engaging fans through cross-promotion of The World Cup.
1. The San Francisco Giants hit a homerun with this Vine, which garnered a mention from US Soccer, and sparked 948 retweets and 1,334 favorites. A small gesture to show solidarity and support for USMNT that went a long way in helping keep folks simultaneously engaged with America’s favorite past time.

2. The New York Mets showed their support by proclaiming, “We know big moments” relating the USMNT match to advance to the Top 16 with their World Series winning moment. While the tweet only saw 134 retweets and 168 favorites, it did almost 3 times better than any other tweet directly before or after it. A small gesture that creates new engagement for The Mets.

3. The New York Giants filled their feed with several shout outs to Team USA, but the most successful was a tweet that linked to a blog post featuring their kicker Josh Brown. In the post, Brown explains the difference between kicking in futbol and football. What the Giants really did was kick up their social media interactions. With 213 retweets and 239 favorites, it was their most popular post of the day.

4. Finally, The San Fransisco 49ers have been tweeting their support with comparative photos of the USMNT and the 49ers, driving interactions by reminding fans why the organization is awesome and supporting The World Cup at the same time. One of the most popular tweets featured Colin Kaepernick doing his signature touchdown celebration next to a celebratory photo of Jermaine Jones. The tweet had 1,038 retweets and 1,578 favorites. Touchdown.
